The story behind

The Cajun Space Shuttle

As told on the Autocross Forum

I thought the Ranchero would be a good choice considering it was almost free. Had a 429 motor with a lot of power and used a lot of gas and oil. The first event I went to with this rig was at TJ stadium in Port Arthur where this picture was taken (I was unable to confiscate the film). As you can tell the spring rate in the rear was soft. At 35 mph it would start rocking and rolling, just short of control loss. The kid by the car is now 35 so this wasn't yesterday. The next week after the event a friend at work with a Ford 4x4 gave me a set of rear springs. All it took was jacking up the rear and setting them in place and Viola, stability at all speeds. The next event was a TLAC I think, at the Acadiana Mall in Lafayette. Going over I was driving something like 70 with people passing me and almost running off the Interstate, gawking at the rig. So many people were looking and pointing I thought it was maybe more than the car, like my fly was open. Getting the car off the "transporter" was easy. Going back on not so easy. At Lafayette a rain shower occurred during the event and everything was still wet at the end. I tried to drive it up the almost vertical ramp (which I though must be like lifting off in the space shuttle). I remember clouds, birds, and getting air sick. It took about 6 people to help it up the wet ramps. I figured I would start losing friends if I kept this up so I then decided to build a trailer and the Space Shuttle program ended.
