Southwest Louisiana Region has a “growing” junior karting program with 10 boys and girls racing this past season. Pictured above is a group roundup taken after competing in a Trans Louisiana Autocross Challenge series event, a four event series that pits the four clubs in Louisiana, Red River, Delta, CenLa , and SoWeLa Regions.
While Junior karting is not new to SoWeLa a three year void was created when our karters reached the majic age of sixteen and moved on to full-sized cars (or shifter karts). They are Andy Snider, Zack Perkins, and Stefan Waller. Given they were all the same age, SoWeLa learned that a kart program can vanish when the Formula Junior A (age 12-15) drivers acquire a state driver’s permit and move up with no FJB drivers to fill the void. We learned that Formula Junior B (age 8-11) competitors offer the kart program continuity and the region it’s future leaders.
Listed below are the current junior drivers:
Formula Junior A Open
Grant Miller in a Birel/Yamaha and Alex Wicker in a Margay/Briggs.
Formula Junior A Ladies
Andrea Melanson in a Margay /Briggs, Alexis LeDoux in a Yamaha/Yamaha, and Kelsi Wicker in a Margay/Briggs.
Formula Junior B Open
Ben Narby in a Invader /Briggs, Christian Smith in a Dino/Honda, Logan Breaux in a Shadow /Briggs, and Julious Suydam in a Invader /Briggs.
Formula Junior B Ladies
Lindsay Miller in a Shadow/Briggs
Notable in the above group is Andrea Melanson, a 14 year old whose speed continues to impress the club, so much so she was voted the SoWeLa Female Driver of the Year (that’s all female drivers in the club).
In the above picture the Jr. Karters are: L to R- Christian Smith, Ben Narby, Kelsi Wicker, Alexis LeDoux, Julious Suydam, Grant Miller, Alex Wicker, Andrea Melanson, Logan Breaux (in car), Not pictured is Lindsey Breaux.
